It's a long way from DuPont Circle to Waynesboro VA, and frankly Kate needed a reality check after weeks in the lap of State Dept luxury ... and Days Inn is just the place to do it.
Functional and friendly but with some distinctly feral clients ... of the "you're not from 'round here are ya?" kind...''
Waynesboro twas tho, not nearby Staunton ..just be clear about that lest you find yourself vainly searching for the Staunton Days Inn one rainy night..
Pool was good too, with the temperatures in the mid 30's during the day. And Hugh was introduced to the delights of the waffle thus furthering his education re the great cuisine of America. ... the breakfast was however another environmental disaster, generating about half a tonne of plastic waste. Recycling is a concept still taking hold in Virginia..
Spent the rest of the day in the fantastic Blue Ridge Mountains - ending up in the city of Roanoke at rush-hour after a navigation malfunction, and then drove onto the farming town of Wytheville VA for the evening. Kind of eerie actually ...the local supermarket had space for a thousand cars ...but the supermarket itself was entirely empty save the staff upon my arrival. Being a New Zealander this isolation was only a little disturbing. Bought some Martha Stewart plastic wine glasses. ( $1.25 ea, only the best on hols) and wandered about amazed at the choice and the low costs. I'm sure they realise how good they have it here.

The combination of low cost, high calorie and vast size is one we Americans embrace at every opportunity. Glad to see you're enjoying it as well. Are we allowed to make fun of the super-sized folks that eventually return to Wellington?!
On a more important topic, do you see many signs of Obamamania as you travel the byways of the newest battleground state? Obviously it's tough to beat the Dom Post's coverage of the US elections ... but what's the word on the street in Virginia?
Hi great to hear that you are having a wonderful time. as for Crackerbarrel - it sounds revolting! Great pics of the trail and bear - did you read Bill Brysons book about the trail and his encounter with bears? Dont eat too much plastic food or you will have to super size the seat on the way home.
