The day after Thanksgiving is "Black Friday" which signals the beginning of the Xmas shopping madness. This year the retail sector is really hoping consumers will forget about the economy and spend spend spend. However i get the feeling many people are keeping their wallets tightly closed. In the past the cry to "spend our way out of recession" has inspired Americans to exercise the buying power of their internal market ...but that has been based on access to easy credit, or working overtime etc . All that has changed now, and while the attraction of a $300 laptop may pull some people into the stores, in many places it is very quiet.

"A worker died after being trampled and a woman miscarried when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart Friday morning, witnesses said. The unidentified worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m. Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down.
